If your WordPress site is a five page informational site, never updating any of the software means you’re not taking advantage of any of the security updates that get released from time to time. Not only are you potentially putting your site at risk, but not keeping backups means if you get hacked there’s no way to get the site back.

And if you’re running a small business, that means more money out of the business pocket either trying to fix the hack or recreating the site. If backups were in place, recovering the site would just be a matter of re-uploading the backups and re-importing the database.

Another reason you should be running site files and database backups regularly? Updating to the latest releases of WordPress and/or the plugins installed on your site is no guarantee everything will play nice together.

I have a blogger client (Hi Wendy!) that updated her site last year, and it made the footer disappear on her site. To this day, not sure why that happened. But if we had been constantly running backups on the site, it wouldn’t have taken nearly as long to re-instate the site.

Ask any web designer, and they’ll tell you one of the most frustrating things is when a client goes into the back end of the site, does something to it, breaks it, and then says what did I do can you fix it. If I’m the one doing your updates to begin with, the chances of something going haywire are way, way less. The question becomes would you rather pay for a monthly maintenance subscription to get your backups and updates done correctly, or spend a large amount later on to fix a site that broke?

That broken footer I talked about earlier? It took over 8 hours to get back everything that went wrong.
