Cleaning the Shower with Vinegar

Anyone with more than one kid will tell you… That second kid totally wreaks havoc on any and all routines you had in place before she got there.

I’ll be honest. My house used to be lots cleaner. I’m still keeping us in clean underwear and breakfast dishes, but I’m lucky if I have a chance to really clean the whole house like once a month. And I’ve become a huge fan of the clean one room each day for a week method when it’s time to really handle messy house ridiculousness.

So it’s been about a month since my last cleaning, and then we were all gone every night last week for VBS at church. But we were all still living there during the day. And I couldn’t get any of my daily cleanup taken care of.

And our house got straight up ridiculous.

Last night I started the deep clean with the bathrooms and kitchen, because I wanted to get the worst offenders out of the way. The showers… I just hate cleaning showers with the fire of a thousand suns. So I hit up the internet to see if there was a really easy way to do it, and BINGO.

I’m cleaning the shower with vinegar from now on.

Vinegar and blue Dawn dish soap, my friends.

It doesn’t get any easier than one part vinegar and one part blue Dawn dish soap in a bucket. Use a scrubber to hit your bathtub with it, let it sit for an hour, and rinse.

You don’t feel like you’re gonna die from nasty shower cleaner fumes, and it’s easy on the septic system. Bonus? You don’t have to worry about it getting on your kid’s rear end the next time they sit in the tub.

The only thing I wished I had done different was to scrub a little bit more during the rinse – some of my soap scum is really bad, y’all.

I haven’t used this concoction on any other cleaning projects, but I bet it’d be a better option for our stainless steel kitchen sink! I’ve been using Comet on that and it always leaves behind a residue.

  1. This is a great tip! and ever since I was a little girl, I can remember my mum using vinegar on lots of things to clean with especially windows!! I have not tried this on the shower but believe me I will now. Funny I never thought of this after all the advice I got from my mum about using vinegar… Thanks for a great reminder!!!!
