Family Day Out – The Jepsen Center in Savannah

Last week, while Josh and I were walking around downtown Savannah, I spotted a poster reminding me that the Andy Warhol show was almost over at The Jepsen Center and I hadn’t been to see it yet. I knew right then and there that our next family day out would be to the museum!

Unfortunately, Josh was in classes all week with work so he couldn’t join us. But my mom in law Carole was free, so she joined us for a day full of kid friendly adventures in downtown Savannah. Read on for our tips on a fun filled inexpensive day with your family!

What to Bring

• Pack your stroller, The Jepsen Center is an easy five minute walk from the parking lot but our adventures will take you a little further away, and you’ll want to make sure you’re not carrying tired kids all over town!

• An entire change of clothes for each kid. If you’re following along on our entire adventure, and if you want happy children at the end of the day, make sure to bring a full change of clothes including socks and underwear.

Parking

When you get downtown, for this particular adventure you’ll want to park in the Civic Center parking lot if it’s available. We parked there all day for less than two dollars! I’m not kidding – that’s one of the best parking deals in town.

First Stop: The Jepsen Center

Start on the third floor and work your way down – that way you can get through the more straight laced educational stuff first, and then continue on to the kids areas after. What was really great is we were there on a Wednesday morning. It was fairly quiet, and our kids had plenty of space to be just slightly a little ridiculous without running into any priceless works of art.

In typical kid fashion, Joy would’ve been happy if we stayed in the lobby all day so she could practice walking while holding onto these brightly colored benches.

It was so awesome to see Warhol’s work in person. His screenprints seem like they might be really boring because they’re all the same over and over. But in person, you can see how different they really are, and the little touches he added to each piece to make them unique.

Two words. Arrested Development and vertigo.

Wait, that’s four. But you get it, right?

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Chuck Close piece in person before – it was so awesome. Get super close to his work, and his portraits are made up of patterns of circles, squares, and other shapes.

I’m not kidding, this is the same Chuck Close piece that Carole and Phil were looking at.

They had some great Keith Haring work on display, too! I’ve always dug his cartoony style.

After the main third floor gallery, we took Phil and Joy to the kids areas, where they played happily for almost two hours.

Finally saw the famous bird girl statue in person! This felt like such a big deal because in college I worked at a few different tourist shops, and every single person that came through the stores wanted to know where they could see it. This was back when Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil was huge – right around the time they were filming the movie here in Savannah.

When we finished playing in the kid areas of The Jepsen Center, we had lunch in the cafe and advanced token to Ellis Square.

The Fountain in Ellis Square

Phil’s been intrigued by the fountain in Ellis Square ever since we moved here in 2012. But our family day out marked the first time he was ever brave enough to play in the fountain. He was in that fountain FOREVER. And then that change of clothes we brought along came in handy!

Joy wanted to get into the fountain with her big bruh bruh so bad, but she just couldn’t quite bring herself to do it just yet. Soon though. Mark my words.

City Market – Ice Cream at Savannah Candy Kitchen

Once the kids were dried off, we walked over to City Market and popped into Savannah Candy Kitchen for some ice cream. Phil’s full of surprises, he got his ol’ standby chocolate.

And Joy just got impatient that I wasn’t shoveling ice cream into her cake hole fast enough. She started feeding herself ice cream almost immediately.
