Try This Homemade Dry Shampoo Recipe!

I’ve always been a little skeptical, but I successfully tried a homemade dry shampoo recipe this week.

I told you about how I got an awesome massage when I was at Burke Williams Day Spa this week, right? Right.

I don’t know about you, but when I get a massage, I get a massage. They ask me what kind of pressure I like, and I tell them to go nuts. Because I got a lot of kinks to work out, and they’re pros at workin’ out those kinks. When Crearandra asked if I wanted a head massage along with my back massage, “go nuts” is what I told her. Because my hair is pretty wild, do-what-you-want style, and I don’t mind if it gets messier.

The one small problem with this, was when I woke up a little too late the next morning, needing to get us all ready for a Disneyland day with Jay and Elizabeth, running way behind, no time for a shower, and rocking what can best be described as super-greasy-massage-oil hair.

I grabbed my phone, I hit up that google machine, and I looked up homemade dry shampoo recipes. I found a few, but here’s the one I used based on ingredients I had in my cupboard.

Homemade Dry Shampoo

Ingredients:
Equal parts baking soda and oatmeal. (Grind up the oatmeal if you have time. I didn’t.)

Directions:
Mix baking soda and oatmeal.

Boom. That’s your recipe for homemade dry shampoo.

Put it on your head, comb through, done.

I would recommend doing this over your kitchen sink so it can catch the shampoo as it falls off your head. For the small batch I made, I used 1/4 cup each baking soda and oatmeal, and saved the extra unused shampoo in a clean, dry canning jar.

What other homemade dry shampoo recipes have you tried? I like this one, and now I’m open to making other ones when this batch is gone.

Before you know it, I’ll stop bathing entirely!

(Kidding.)

(Not really kidding. We all know it.)

  1. I once went without shampoo for about 3 months. I kept two squeeze bottles in the shower – one with a baking soda solution for cleansing, and one with an apple cider solution for conditioning. My hair looked amazing about 50% of the time, greasy and flat the other 50%

It worked pretty well, but I think a real shampoo was necessary at least once a month.

  2. I have natural red hair (not red red, but not strawberry red), what can I use for dry shampoo that won’t make my red lighter than it already is?

  3. Stupid question but do you have to wash your hair after putting the dry shampoo on you hair? I’ve never tried dry shampoos before so I’m not totally sure. It’s always been on my to-do list but I can’t seem to shake off my infant-like reliance on proper shampoos lol.

    • Not a stupid question at all! When I use my homemade dry shampoo, I stand over the tub and put some in my hands and kinda work it through so the bits fall into the tub. Then sometimes I’ll hit my hair with super quick blow-dryer action just to fluff things up. No need to wet your hair at all!

  4. Hello

Can I use dry shampoo as a replacement for shampoo

Also I used bicarbonate of soda and water and it has left my hair dry and frizzy after one day

Will this help it and do I need to use a conditioner

    • I use dry shampoo as a replacement for regular shampoo just about every other day – some people swear by the no shampoo method, but I haven’t quite gotten on that party train just yet! If your hair’s getting frizzy, maybe try putting a tiny bit of olive oil in it? That’s done wonders for my hair, true story.

  5. I have seen a lot of articles recently about DIY dry shampoo and it seems like a great idea. Saves you money, better for your hair, and so on. This looks like one of the best recipes that I have seen thus far, so I am definitely going to try it!
