Let it Snow – Blue Christmas Snowflake Concept Art

I don’t know why, but I’ve been obsessed with drawing snowflakes in the studio lately – so let’s just go with it and let it snow already!

I have so many ideas for this “blue Christmas” themed group – I started with just tons of different drawings of snow. All of it so far has centered around the indigo blue and white holiday color palette. Most of the concept work for this particular let it snow group of Christmas ornaments was painting shapes in super deep blue gouache, and then using a white gel pen to draw on top of it.

Some of the more detailed white snowflakes in the background are those shapes taken into photoshop, with just the blue paint shapes selected and pulled over, and then given a white color overlay. It lets you see all of the really cool fine gel pen details, but the snowflakes themselves don’t totally take over from the Christmas ornament designs. They sit really nicely in the background.

I played with other colors for this let it snow group of Christmas ornaments, and I tried adding in pop colors, but in the end I just really like the blue and white together. Maybe in production there could be hits of shiny silver… That wouldn’t feel like too much of a disconnect to me. And if the Let it Snow text was by itself, that could go nuts with a fun color palette with bright turquoise and hot pink, or even traditional red and green.

Can I tell you… I would love to see these Christmas ornaments as actual physical ornaments I could hang on my own tree.

But it’d also be totally awesome to see them as huge holiday decorations in a store, like hanging from the ceiling as you walk in. Maybe with some of those snowflakes hanging alongside them!

What do you think about this Let it Snow group?

I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
