The People of Wal-Mart are Rad - Hearts and Laserbeams

You all know that People of Walmart website. The one where they talk about how ridiculously comedically awful some people look when they go shopping at the local Walmart.

I love that website. Because people are insane.

But I also love the people of Walmart because multiple times this last couple of weeks they’ve shown me they’re not only chock full of… fashion sense

They’re also full of heart.

When I go grocery shopping, if there’s anything in the house that I need that isn’t quite something you’d find at a grocery store, I end up heading to Walmart because of the whole one-stop shopping thing. Right now, with Joy being 4 months old, things can get a little crazy. I strap her into her baby carrier, get Phil into the seat of the shopping cart, our huge overstuffed diaper bag goes into the basket of the cart, and off we go, chatting and joking all the way.

A couple of weeks ago, I was getting to the end of the shopping trip and it showed. Joy was fussing that she was ready to eat, Phil was tired, I was getting to the end of my rope right there in the produce section. As I struggled to open one of those stupid plastic bags to put some apples in, a woman silently slid up next to me and handed me an already open bag.

At that moment, I could’ve cried because it felt like the nicest thing anyone’s ever done for me.

Monday morning, we hit up Walmart again, and were met with the kindness of strangers right off the bat.

As our circus of crazy wheeled over to the dairy products, an older guy in a motorized scooter motioned for me to walk over. He had a small dog in the basket of his rascal, and I rearumed he wanted Phil to see him. “Don’t let him pet the dog,” he said quickly as I got closer. I wondered what the heck he wanted, as he held out his hand towards me. And dropped two quarters in my hand.

“Put these in your kids’ piggy banks,” he said.

A few aisles later, in the baking supplies, Phil and I were being silly and he started chanting “I WANT CAKE!”

I’d answer with “You can’t have cake!”

“I WANT CAKE!” he’d reply.

Then another older gentleman wearing a retired Navy baseball hat walked up. “I WANT CAKE!” he yelled happily at Phil.

“I WANT CAKE!” Phil yelled back.

Then they fist bumped like old friends.

I am not making that up.

The old man continued on, and he kept up the call and return with Phil. As we kept shopping, we could hear him 2 aisles over yelling “I WANT CAKE!” back at Phil every time he said it.

So yeah.

The people of Walmart are rad.

What’s the craziest thing that’s ever happened to you there?
