Today’s Peek in the Illustration Studio

It may seem weird that my next Early Morning Arty Party project is painting a piece of furniture, but it’s my party so deal with it! There’s a cabinet in our dining room that my mom in law Carole gave us when we all moved here, and for the last year it’s been in the very beginning stages of being converted into a computer cabinet so I can move work out of the office we currently have set up in the master bedroom. My adventures right now are chalk painting this cabinet and setting it up as my new tiny office!
.
I’ve been fortunate enough to have a separate room for an office since Phil was a baby – seven years! Back then, it was a small bedroom in our home in Long Beach, a room so small there was only space enough for my desk and one piece of baby gear. When Phil was done sleeping in the playpen, I’d have to shimmy that out the door so I could bring in a blanket for him to crawl around on. When he wanted his swing, I’d have to shimmy that into the office… .
There’s more space now, but also more extraneous clutter… And it’s just not fun for me being creative in the clutter… This is gonna be a good solve. The computer comes out into a public room as our kids get old enough to use it, the tiny office can be shut at the end of the day (you have no idea how crazy making it is walking through your office multiple times a day when you’re not working seeing all the work sitting there!)
.
And the truth is right now I’m happiest drawing at our kitchen table. Separate art studio someday, shared home art space today. Our dining room has more space for everyone to draw together that the bedroom office does not.
.
But the most exciting part for the kids is at the end of this long project, mom and dad move out of the other small bedroom into the master bedroom, and each kid gets their own room. We walked the paint section at Lowe’s yesterday talking about thinking about paint colors for their rooms in the future…
.
This was a very long post. The cabinet’s a work in progress but it’ll bring exciting changes all around. Let’s get cracking!
