Traffic Box Mural Projects: Squirrel Seasons
It has been so much fun to create traffic box mural projects with the City of Stockbridge over this past year; can you believe I’ve already painted seven for the city?! This latest one, called “Squirrel Seasons”, is at the corner of Campground Road and Winbrook Drive.

Any great design project doesn’t just happen on the fly, and mural projects aren’t any different. At the start of this project, I had some meetings in person, on the phone, and via email with the City of Stockbridge. Through our conversations, an image of a park in four different seasons was brought up that someone had seen on Pinterest. It sounded super cute, and I knew I could bring that idea into something fresh and new.
Traffic Box Mural Project Concept Art

When I create sketches for a mural project, I start with a rectangle that’s a proportionate size to the final piece. So if a wall is 8′ x 10′, I’ll start with a sketch that’s 8″ x 10″. I’ll also do tons of measurements on the wall and mark out any windows, signs, pipes, anything that may need to be worked around in the design. So for this traffic box mural, I marked out each side of the box, along with where the shorter areas of the smaller box jutting out from the larger box occurred.
Laying it out as a flat sketch also helped me create a design that wasn’t just a standalone image on one side – I absolutely love creating motion in my public art pieces, and encouraging the viewer to walk around it and see all sides.
So at the end of this traffic box mural project, we landed on something that pulled in the original concept of a park in four seasons:

And married it with my love of cute characters and corner transitions in murals to pull the viewer around the entire piece:

It’s warming up outside and I’m super ready to add more mural pieces and traffic box mural projects to my calendar! Have you been looking to hire a mural artist in the Henry County area? I’d love to hear from you!
