Art Inspiration – Our Chickens and Chicken Coops

I’m currently working my way through the Lilla Rogers Make Art That Sells Home Decor class. At the end of the next five weeks, I’ll have a brand new group of fun artwork to share with art directors! But first, you gotta pick a theme for the collection. You need art inspiration. We were given three choices, and the farm theme was the instantย winner for me.

My family lives in a really rural area just outside of Savannah, Georgia. We have big dreams to have a fully functioning farm on our ten acres someday, but in the meantime we do have a bajillion chickens and bees.

Which I immediately went and took pictures of so I could haveย super personal art inspiration from our little farm. I hope you get some great ideas from seeing these, too!

Here’s some of our ladies – if you’re looking into getting your own backyard chickens, you can’t go wrong with Buff Orpingtons. They’re super friendly, really good consistent egg layers… And they’re delicious.

I won’t tell you how I know that.

Hashtag: #farmlife.

These metal chicken feeders are the bomb, especially if you’ve got a bunch of girls. If you elevate it a bit, you’ll cut down on the amount of crud that gets into the food.

Our Barred Rock chickens (the black and white speckled ones) aren’t particularly interested in being my BFF, so it took me a while to get a good shot of one.

They’re my favorite – they have the coolest markings!

Finally got her! I knew I wanted that girl in the art inspiration mix – and lemme tell ya, I had a lot of fun coming up with little patterns to depict her black and white feathers.

Check out the brown and black chickens – they have awesome feathers, too; they almost look like leopard spots!

Here’s our rooster – check out his take charge pose! We got this guy last year, when one of our friends found out one of her hens wasn’t quite a hen. (Insert rooster crowing noise here.)

This was our original chicken coop from when we lived back in Long Beach, California. Josh’s uncle Donnie helped build it, and it was pretty much the coolest chicken coop ever.

When I say Uncle Donnie helped build it, I mean we helped him.

And when I say we helped him, I think I mean we handed him deck screws every now and then.

This guy builds awesome stuff.

The spring after we moved to Georgia, my friend Jenn and I built this small chicken coop in the backyard using some cinder blocks to bring it up off the ground, and a bunch of old shipping pallets. The slats in the pallets were perfect for holding up large wooden dowels (which I wired in place) for the birds to perch on at night.

It was so freakin fun to build this thing – we didn’t have any concrete plans, just a photo I had seen on Pinterest. We kind of winged it from there.

This is our main chicken coop these days – some of our friends from church helped build it. It’s huge. It houses about 45-50 chickens at any given moment. The number fluctuates a bit because we’re out in the country… there’s critters out here…

And sometimes they get eaten.

Whomp whomp.

This is a more classic chicken coop style – we picked it up at Tractor Supply for a group of chicks that were big enough to be outside, but not quite big enough to be free range with the older ladies. You can grab your own here on Amazon.
