My early finishers this week created a series of pop art inspired MLK Jr murals for our assembly on Friday. I can’t wait to post my thoughts about one of the things that makes Warhol so special to me on the wall next to this one for folks to read as they pass by.

You can’t walk the halls yourself most likely, so I’ll tell you here. We took the kids to the Warhol show at the Jepson in Savannah a few years ago. One of the things that really struck me – he’s KNOWN for these certain iconic images, and when you look at a bunch of “the same” one next to each other your first thought might be “big deal”. .
What I loved about seeing four of the same Warhol Marilyn Monroe hanging together that day is they’re NOT all the same. Each has individual unique drawn elements or brush strokes added after the screen printing. Each is a unique work of art. .
These three MLK Jr pieces hanging at our school started as a cheap color by number PDF I bought for 8 bucks online. By giving kids the true creative freedom they crave, they turned into works of art made in a variety of art materials (crayon, marker, tempera, pastels, colored pencil) by over a hundred students. I’m proud of them.
