I connect more with the struggle that was revealed after Robin Williams’ death than I did with his comedy career.

I was there in high school.

I know it was high school – lots of teens get dramatic. Lots of them listen to Nine Inch Nails, or whatever band the depressed kids of today listen to, and think about it. I tried to end it one night when I was about 17, driving home from work.

I promise I wasn’t distraught over having to work at the returns and exchanges counter at Kids R Us. We don’t need to get into the why I almost drove my car off the freeway. It was 20 years ago, and I’ve gotten past that deep dark place to a much, much happier life.

It’s just another reminder – everyone’s got stuff going on. Some of the happiest people you know are having a hard time inside. No one’s got it all together. The best we can do is try to be a good friend and try to make our loved ones know how much we care.

Hearing that someone felt like there was no other option than to end the suffering really makes me sad.

It just hurts.

Because if you stick around, life might just get a whole lot better.
