Book Report: Weird Hikes by Art Bernstein

Book Report: Weird Hikes by Art Bernstein • Steph Calvert ArtI’ve been taking the kids to the library pretty consistently starting with their 2016 summer reading program, so it’s kind of weird that I only just realized a few weeks ago that I maybe could pick up a book or two for myself as well.

Duh.

A few weeks ago, it finally dawned on me that there was a whole section in the library chock full of boring old books for boring old adults. Once our kids were done picking about 30 kids books (go big or go home), I led them over to the big people section.

Where they immediately got bored and started running circles around my legs. So like, these kids of ours are very cute and funny…

But there wasn’t much chance to really get into picking something. I glossed over a bunch of artsy titles, ended up in front of some guidebooks about hiking, and picked up a copy of Weird Hikes by Art Bernstein.

It seemed interesting enough, I needed something to page through during planning periods on my substitute teaching days, and the kids were out of patience. So it came home with me.

I finished this book on Monday, and it was pretty awesome. If you’re into the outdoors, you’ll dig it. Lots of stories about possible ghost sightings, creepy sounds, one that sounds almost like lucid dreaming during a bear attack, and then one fictional piece about an outcast little boy that broke my heart and challenged the muhmuh in me to not cry in the high school classroom I was sitting in.

One thing I really liked about this book, was that after each tale of weirdness the author provides detailed information on how to get to the trail he was hiking on so the reader can visit it as well. My brain made mental notes of places I wanted to see immediately and never ever wanted to visit at the same time.

Cuz some of the stories.

Are kind of creepy.

I want our family to go on more outdoorsy adventures in 2017 – things like camping, fishing, hiking… Reading Weird Hikes by Art Bernstein cemented that goal in my head even more solidly. You can pick up a copy for your Kindle by clicking here.

Have you read Weird Hikes by Art Bernstein?

I’d love to know what you thought about it in the comments – or share what you’re reading right now!

I’m back in the reading game and looking for new titles to sink my brain into!
