A Time to Dance
So I’m reading the whole bible for the first time this year. Which feels strange, because I went to Catholic school from kindergarten through eighth grade.
But yeah… never actually read the bible.
My church is getting through the One Year Bible, and I saw it as a chance to fix that and actually crack the book open. As an adult, and one that’s found a connection with a local church… I want to learn as much as I can. And if I can get through Stephen King’s unabridged version of The Stand, I can do anything, right?
But I wanted to do it a little differently – when I was looking at one year bibles at the bookstore, I noticed that they don’t take you through the good book from cover to cover. They jump around like that movie Momento did… and it felt weird to me. I really just felt the pull to read it from start to finish.
So I found this website that creates bible reading plans. You can pick a start date from a few different options, and then decide how you want to read it – including cover to cover.
I am woefully behind schedule… I think I’m still getting through July’s readings. But I just read Ecclesiastes for the first time.
I can NOT be the only adult reading the bible for the first time that pictured Kevin Bacon in Footloose.
Right? I can’t be the only one.
But before you get upset with me… Remember I actually did learn some bible verses in grade school thanks to that movie.
Ecclesiastes 3 (NIV)
A Time for Everything
3 There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens:
2 a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,
3 a time to kill and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build,
4 a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance,
5 a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,
a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing,
6 a time to search and a time to give up,
a time to keep and a time to throw away,
7 a time to tear and a time to mend,
a time to be silent and a time to speak,
8 a time to love and a time to hate,
a time for war and a time for peace.
And since we’re on the topic, I’m also pretty sure the old “Dust in the Wind” song was inspired by Ecclesiastes, too. Just sayin.
