#Headdesk. Newegg Email Spam Attack

My family does a midweek weekend on Wednesdays and Thursdays – those are Josh’s days off, I make my own schedule here at Hearts and Laserbeams, and that lets us still have family weekends together.

But my small business clients are generally online Monday through Friday. So on my days off, I use the Gmail app on my phone to check in and make sure no one’s having a major emergency while I’m out. This morning, I was greeted with a little emergency of my own.

There were 2,500 emails in my inbox from a Newegg email spam attack.

Newegg Email Spam Attack - Hearts and Laserbeams

Major facepalm.

Do you know how long it takes to clean that many emails out while you’re on your phone?

At first, I thought these were all legit emails from Newegg.com. I wondered what kind of glitch happened in their email newsletter that made it send the same Builder’s Blueprint offer to me over two thousand times. I sent off a tweet telling them they were coming off as desperate.

Cleaning this ridiculous amount of spam out of my primary inbox in Gmail was taking forever, so I fired up my desktop computer. I realized that this wasn’t actually a sales email gone wrong… it was a Newegg email spam attack. Every single email looked like it came from Newegg. But every single one came from a different spammy email address.

Facepalm.

The emails started coming through at about 12:05am last night, and as of this morning as I was cleaning em out, I was still receiving them. I had to set up an email filter to combat them taking over my inbox. To do that, I did a search for “Newegg”. Then under the “more” tab just above the list of emails, I chose “create filter”. Since I’m not a Newegg customer anyways, I chose to filter my messages that say Newegg so they go in the trash.

As a business owner, I started realizing what a negative impact this might have on Newegg.

I just plainly told you I filtered emails that look like they’re coming from Newegg into the trash. How many other people have been hit by this Newegg email spam attack, and how many other people have set up email filters to stop it in the future? How will this affect theirย newsletter open rates?

Yikes.

Have you seen the Newegg email spam attack in your inbox?

How did you combat it on your end? Leave your own tips and recommendations in the comments!
