It’s All About Perspective

sketch of houses all about perspective

There’s a lot of great things I’ve seen on the internet this week, but a stay at home mom’s piece on Babble trumped all for me. She wrote a great post about why being a stay at home mom was a luxury for her husband, and it smacked me right in my big stupid face.

So many times as a work at home mom, I feel the pull between trying to be really, really good at my job, and really, really good at my family. A lot of times, I’ve told friends, I’m hanging on by a thread. Not in terms of being on the verge of losing my touch as a designer or a mother, but more like I feel like I’m trying so hard to get everything right. And when things go a tad off track, I get upset that because I’m the one with the more flexible schedule, I end up being the one that deals with things like getting Phil to his dentist appointment when his mouth hurts.

I’m forgetting – I don’t HAVE to do this, I GET to do this. And what I get to do for work is an amazing blessing for our family.

I get to share my office with two littles who are hands down the best kids I’ve ever met in my life. (Apologies to family and friends with kids.) I get to move my schedule around so I can take care of things that come up. I get to do this stuff to help out my husband who’s work schedule isn’t so flexy.

And when we don’t do many chores during our weekend together, it’s not because we’re lazy meat sacks. (Even though we do binge watch American Dad like it’s disappearing from Netflix tomorrow.) We don’t do chores during a lot of our weekends together because we work so hard to knock that stuff out during the week, and all we wanna do on our two days off is be with our family. By the end of the weekend, our house looks like a bomb went off. Because we’re living in it.

I need these reminders sometimes.

That I’m doing ok.

That if I’m God’s gift to my husband, I should try to work on an attitude adjustment. Because I didn’t come with a gift receipt.
