When They Draw announced they were compiling illustrations for a book based on Greek references, the very first thing that popped into my mind was drilling the main three types of Greek columns into my brain during Art History 1 in college. Doric, Ionic, Corinthian was a constant murmur in the back of my mind while I studied for that test. And in Savannah, Georgia? Those columns are everywhere. So once you’ve learned the types of columns, you kind of just HAVE to look at columns everywhere you go and identify which of the three main orders those columns fall under. And then 20+ years after you graduate maybe you’re still doing it.

Don’t judge me.

I was jazzed to find another columns tidbit that I had forgotten though! The leafy topped corinthian style columns have a meaning behind the leafiness. Those leaves are made to look like the Acanthus leaf, which is a symbol of immortality. Why, you ask? I don’t know its Greek to me lolz.
