Snow Day at Madrac Farms

If you’re an Effingham county local, you’re gonna wanna clear your calendar this Saturday so you don’t miss the second and last Snow Day at Madrac Farms for 2015! We checked it out last weekend with our friend Carolyn and her kids, and we had a blast – read on for our hot tips for making the most of your snow day adventure!

Don’t forget to go prepared! I have a tendency to overpack and try to prepare for every possible eventuality – I spent at least an hour putting together supplies for our family to survive snow day. I packed extra clothes for everyone, a bear-looking fleece coverall thing for Joy, snacks for days, and mittens, hats, scarves galore.

Truly, all you need is to dress in light layers with a jacket on top. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting wet and dirty, and wear warm socks. Wear a hat and mittens, and bring one extra pair of mittens.

Get there early! Snow Day at Madrac Farms goes from noon til 8pm. If you’re taking littles with you, aim to leave your house by 11:15 and get there around 11:45. By noon, there’s already a healthy line to get in!

Plan to hit the sled hills first – even if you get to them first, you’ll be waiting in line a bit for em. The smaller hill has a shorter line, fyi – it’s a little hard to tell, so don’t be afraid to ask the folks around you which hill they’ll waiting for – you might be able to fast track yourself!

If you plan to eat the snow, definitely do so as early in the day as possible.

I watched Joy eating the snow that everyone had walked on, and I was like “well I guess that’s kids being kids,” and I chalked it up to her building up a good immunity to germs. Then she offered me some.

I didn’t want her to think I thought I was better than her… So I ate some dirty snow.

Don’t judge me.

The snow field play area was one of the most crowded areas – if you’re going to the snow day at Madrac Farms with little kids, getting there early is a really good idea. We noticed later in the day that the combo of tired kids mixed with exuberant kids who had just gotten there made for a more rough snowball battlefield.

If your kids are going to snow day with the intentions of making a snow man, encourage them but make sure you mentally prepare them for the probability that their snow creation will get messed with by other kids almost immediately.

Hot tip: pack some snowman supplies to bring with you! We used Ritz crackers for the eyes, which were delicious to snack on but REALLY crumbly.

Next up we hit the bounce houses – let your kids jump for as long as they want so they’ll sleep on the way home!

And then… Just like at Christmas when you give your kids a present and they play with the boxes… After all our preparations for snow day at Madrac Farms, the kids spent most of the time there playing in a huge expanse of dirt behind the bounce house.

We had so much fun, hope our tips help you have a rad time yourselves this weekend!

  1. What fun! You live in a great place. Loved seeing the kids having so much fun and the photo of you and Joy in the beginning of your blog an also Josh and Phil. Keep up all this fun stuff and great writing. Thanks for sharing.

    • Totally! I try to keep current on the blogging and the facebooking and all that cuz there’s so many people that we don’t get to see on a daily basis. Miss you guys tons!

  2. Steph, thanks so much for visiting and the great review! I love the pics and hope you and your family had a great time visiting. We love helping people make memories and I hope this was a wonderful experience for your family. Based on the suggestions of some of the families to come out last weekend, we are separating the lines for the 2 slides this Saturday, and we are making the Snow Pit a snowball free zone for 20 minutes every hour so people can enjoy the snow without fear of a snowball fight. We hope you visit again and if you have any other helpful suggestions, please don’t hesitate to email me. Thanks again!
