Billy Bonka’s Hot Dog Factory

I was talking to my brother Brandon last weekend, and something came up about the smokestacks you can see from Pacific Coast Highway in Huntington Beach. He told me when he was little, he always thought it was a hot dog factory. And he decided as a kid that it must’ve been owned by Willy Wonka’s brother, Billy Bonka.

So it’s Billy Bonka’s Hot Dog Factory.

I think that’s pretty much the funniest thing ever.

I remember wondering about those smokestacks when I was 6, too. I don’t think I ever really had a creative theory as to what was going on there, because a friend told me dirty water went there, and there was fire in the smokestacks that were burning off the poo in the water.

Which I guess totally made sense to me.

So the question is: what really goes on at that building? I did hear later on that it was a water purification plant, so my 6 year old friend was mostly right, I guess. When you were a kid, what did you think went on there? Was there a mysterious building where you grew up, too?

  1. I see the crazy runs in the family! That’s too funny. I’m sure when I was a kid I made weird stuff up like that too, but my old-self can’t remember.

  2. Man we had all kinds of ridiculous stuff like that when we were kids! My sister Michelle and I would play Star Wars all the time, but there was only one chick, so I was always Princess Leia and she was always Princess Rootie Tootie.

  3. When I was a kid in Massachusetts, we used to go to the beach and I remember there was this big creepy building that could be seen all the way down the beach. The beach was like a jetty where it was kind of horseshoe shaped. It was always dark and it scared me. I used to talk to my brother about it and we were convinced it was a hospital for the mental. We would stare at it like it was watching us. You remember the Charlie brown movie when he goes to Paris and there is nobody in the chateau? It’s all dark and creepy? It was like that. I remember we ended up going back to the beach one time and the building was on fire. We could see the flames from the side of the beach we were on. It was crazy.

  4. OMG that kinda creeped me out dude. I’m trying to remember a place that gave me the heebie-jeebies like that when I was a kid. Grandma’s house maybe? Driving by the cemetery next to my pediatrician’s office when I was 10, definitely.
