Coaster Craft – Wine Painted Log Coasters Tutorial

I’ve got a super fast and easy handmade coaster craft to share today!

I came up with this coaster craft ย for last week’sย forest party. I needed a fun party favor for my blogging friends and it turned out to be cute and delicious to make!

Wine Painted Coaster Craft

You’ll need:

  • red wine (think inexpensive – something you’ve got open already is perfect. Don’t forget to pour a glass for yourself, that’s the delicious part!)
  • small paintbrush
  • blank log rounds (I found inexpensive 3.5″ poplar slices at www.rusticwoodworking.com)
  • a little sketch of what you’re planning to paint on your coasters.
  • optional: permanent black marker. (I’m a huge fan of Permanent Black Staedtler Lumocolor markers from Dick Blick.)
How To Make This Coaster Craft:
Pour a little red wine into a small bowl. Using the small paintbrush, paint your simple design onto each of the coasters. Have fun with it, but keep it simple! Wine WILL spread as it seeps into the wood.
See what I mean? Red wine spreads like crazy on the wood. Go slow and steady! If you have a lot of spreading, let it dry for 10-15 minutes. Then you can ink around your design and give it a more polished, finished feel. It really takes away from the OH GAWD I MESSED IT UP feel, and gives it that hit and miss quirky illustration style.
And then when you’ve inked all your coasters, you’ll end up with a fabulous coaster craft that your friends will go nutty for! Plus, you’ve had a nice relaxing evening sipping a glass of wine and painting. (Who are we kidding, we all know you got plastered and messed it up, and that’s why you had to go back and ink the edges. Sheesh!)

Tree Stamped Driftwood Decor

This one takes literally 30 seconds to do and is perfect for a rustic woodsy event:
  1. Buy little driftwood pieces at your local craft store.
  2. Stamp a few of them with a tree stamp.
  3. Look like Martha Freakin’ Stewart.

    • AHAHAHAHAH I appreciate the sentiment but I am craft show retired! There’s just no time to do it up right, gotta focus my energies on what’s paying the bills with Hearts and Laserbeams. Right now that’s illustration and web design!
