Dear Hearts and Laserbeams, or Notes on Tagging Blog Posts

We received this email from Delilah Snell from the Project Small Blog in our inbox this week:

“What is the difference between “tags” and categories?  Should I be using both…do tags help in a search?? Sorry to bug!”

First off, we’re always happy to help folks answer questions about getting the most out of their sites. No bugging going on here!

Secondly, here’s what we shared with Delilah, it’s good information for all:

Absolutely use tags and categories!

Categories you’re used to – they help separate your blog posts into groups of like posts. “Eat & drink” is all food posts, “Business” deals with posts about your biz, etc.

Tags are keywords, and they WORK. Use any and all tags you can think of, but don’t spend all day on it. I try to use 10-20 tags for my posts, and if I can’t come up with that many I say forget it and move on.

Vintage Stapler from the Project Small Blog

An example for tags: on your latest post, industrial folk-sale office, you could use: stapler, vintage, office supplies, desk, casters, chair, apartment homestead, industrial, cole, steel, shadow box, collage, delilah, snell, project, small, blog

I like to use my name and Hearts and Laserbeams as tags on my posts because it’s oooone more chance of someone finding you on google!

Anyone else have any keyword tips for getting blogs more visibility?
