The Evolution of a Blogger – New Original Illustration

Evolution of a Blogger by Steph Calvert of Hearts and Laserbeams

There’s a great group of gals I chat with almost daily on Facebook about blogging, and over the past couple of weeks we started talking about the evolution of a blogger.

The conversation turned into this discussion about what the evolution of a blogger looks like, and I knew I had to draw it. If you’ve been blogging for any length of time, you’ve hit one of these blog milestones at some point. Whether it was a positive stage or a “what the heck am I doing here” type of feeling… the experience is totally shared.

Funny enough, I was actually IN a Twitter party this afternoon and I answered the question “why did you start blogging?”

My answer was simple, and what follows is a little of my own blogging evolution.

I started this blog for a couple of reasons. I met a group of other early twenty-somethings that were blogging, and I was a little bored. It gave me an outlet to document the shenanigans Jenn and I got into living in small town Wisconsin while we worked at OshKosh B’Gosh.

It was instantly something I loved. I could write about whatever I wanted or nothing at all, and if you check out my archives there was a ton of swearing. I’d shoot ten word posts to my blog from my phone, other times I’d write long rambling posts that almost read like stream of conscious writing.

And almost no capital letters. I was so ee cummings in my early twenties it’s not even funny.

That’s actually stayed with me for the long haul, though – it was only about a year or two ago that I decided to straighten up, fly right, and start paying attention to capital letter again. (Evolution as a blogger!)

Plus in my old age I’ve started paying more attention to site stats and search engine optimization. While my blog is still tons of fun, it’s evolved into more than a chronicle of fun. It’s grown into a solid marketing tool for my art and design business, and the numbers I see in Google Analytics make me proud of all the hard work I put into posts these days.

While I put a little more thought into posts, search terms, pinnable images, and stats these days…

I’ll still always write about rear ends.

I promise.

  1. It seems to me that this evolution is a vicious circle! I’ve already gone through the full evolution (save the “conference” and “twitter parties”…), but I’ve stopped blogging and went back to LIFE for a while, only to come back and start it all over again! haha

    • There’s definitely times where we go through these phases a second third and fourth time! I haven’t been to a blog conference yet, but hopin stuff in the new house is settled enough to make that happen in 2014.

  2. I love your post. I am hoping that one day I will actually know what I am doing. Just starting out and I can’t stop looking at stats and wondering what I am doing wrong. Just want you to know that you brought a smile to my face today! Thank you!

    • It’s a process for sure. Better stats happen with time, practice with search engine optimization, and getting comfortable with finding your voice as a writer. Go read some of my early posts – they are pretty awful!! You can totally do this!
