I Know Why the Caged Bird Laughs

We can all be honest with each other – Saturday Night Live hasn’t been consistently funny in years. Decades, possibly. (Ever? That seems a little harsh.) I think the last time it was really good all the time was when Chris Farley was on? Maybe? I did like Amy Poehler a lot, too. And Andy Samberg is still on there, and I heart him to death… But I’m getting sidetracked.

My point is every now and then, a complete and total chunk of hilarity happens on SNL.

Last weekend, Josh and I watched the episode from around Valentine’s Day 2012 with Maya Rudolph hosting, and it was surprisingly funny from start to finish. Surprising in the sense that come on, guys. It’s Saturday Night Live. It’s just not that good anymore.

But as we watched, magic happened. Pure comedy gold. A light shone down from heaven, and I howled with laughter at Maya Rudolph portraying one of my fave people, Maya Angelou, on an MTV Punk’d style tv show.

I can’t put my finger on what exactly is my favorite part of this clip – but I’m pretty sure it’s one of the following:

“Sister Maya! Was this an act of malice?”
“No, it was an act of whimsy.”

“It was I who put the pie under the rear end of Morgan Freeman.”ย

And oh my lord the way she comes in behind Stephen King with that police hat hanging off her head, and the way she points at it and says “I should know, for I’m a policewomannnnn,” trailing off the way Angelou does when she talks.

I could seriously watch this thing over and over.

I’m pretty sure Maya Rudolph is a comic genius.
