Side Effects May Include Ridiculous Crying

So if you’ve known me for any length of time, it’s a good chance we’ve seen a movie together. And if it’s a really good movie, like that True Grit remake, sometimes I get a bit teared up at the end because it was just so effing awesome.

And if it’s a REALLY really good movie, like The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, I’ll pretty much cry all the way through because it is my favorite movie ever and just hits me right there. I can get a little choked up if I even talk about that movie. It’s my all-time hands-down favorite movie ever.

I was a little unprepared for one of the side effects of having a kid. I knew it would throw the horomones outta whack, I knew it’d make me all emotional and stuff for a little while. I did not know it would make me even more weepy at movies. Really, horomones?!? Are you kidding me right now, I’m already the queen of movie crying. Don’t need more of it, thanks.

The new crying is very specific, and I guess understandable. If I’m watching a movie and there’s a mom and kid scene where they have to say goodbye… I can’t handle it. We saw X-men First Class last weekend, which was to quote Bill and Ted, “most excellent”. But here’s this rear sitting in the middle of the theater weeping openly in the first effing scene where, spoiler alert, Magneto’s mom got shot.

Are. You. Kidding. Me.

Last night Josh was watching Star Wars Phantom Menace, and I plopped down on the couch to join him. And it gets to the scene where annoying little boy Anakin is saying goodbye to his mom and he’s all “will I ever see you again?” and she’s all “what does your heart tell you?” and I’m all “gawd this is the worst movi-WAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!”

Are. You. Kidding. Me.

I’m ok with crying at good movies. I had no idea Phil would make me cry at bad movies. This kid is grounded.

Oh, there’s also a commercial about babies that shows lots of babies, and every time I see it I cry.

Are. You. Kidding. Me.

  1. LOL! I have not had any babies but I’m already a sufferer of this syndrome. No lie, it’s why still to this day I have not ever watched Bambie, the Disney classic. Now I know it only gets worse. Oh, and for your sake I will not tell my husband that you called anything from the Star Wars franchise a bad movie.

  2. AHAHAHAHAHAHAH! Ok Paul can’t hate me for that – I seriously love the first 3 movies, I totally grew up on Star Wars!

Also, spoiler alert. Bambi’s mom gets shot.
