Spring Style Challenge Accepted

You may not know it from our work dress code at Hearts and Laserbeams, but I really like finding cute and unique spring fashion trends on the internet. So when Amanda from the I Go You Go blog invited me to take part in her Spring Styling Challenge, I was like “ummm YES PLEASE!”

The challenge is simple – take a look at some spring fashion trends, come up with a couple of outfits one could wear for Easter or another springtime get-together, and post them online for everyone else to drool over.

The contest closes March 26, and with Craftcation Conference taking place from March 22 through 25 that meant procrastination was not an option! So channel your best Rachel Zoe (or Brad!) and let’s get to stylin’ some looks!

Chick it Out
The gal wearing this outfit is headed somewhere classic like Easter Sunday at church or maybe high tea with her girlfriends. She’s a little quirky, a little Zooey Deschanel, with a great sense of fun. This year, she decided to try and work some classic holiday icons into her ensemble without looking over the top kooky. (Though if you opened her straw Easter basket purse, chances are 100% that she stashed some colored grass in there for comic effect.)

Chick it OutClockwise, from top left: Spring Bloom necklace $72.50, Shabby Apple | Bunny Ears $12, Pottery Barn Kids | Candy colored fingernails | Bottlebrush chick set $15, Pottery Barn Kids | Tapetti kitten heels $68, Anthropologie | Cue the Compliments dress in Dandelion $64.99, Modcloth | Pack of two bunny rings $21.49, ASOS | Superduper woven straw clutch $239, Luisaviaroma.com | Cream leather bow belt $37, Janenorman.co.uk

Spring Fling
Not everyone is as sweet as Easter candy, so hear comes Look 2 busting down your door! This gal is a little edgier, has been known to enjoy a punk rock show or two, but is still every bit a lady. She’s passing on the regular Easter Sunday festivities in favor of a champagne brunch with her girls after a late night karaoke party. Or I don’t know, maybe she’s walk of shaming it to brunch after her own spring fling? Here’s what I do know – Easter always means rad hats, so I made sure to include a cute one that reminds me of the time Jenn and I tried on a slew of Sunday hats at the ย Burlington Coat Factory in Savannah, Georgia.

Extra Credit: The Real World, Easter Edition
These kinds of spring fashion trend boards are super fun to put together, because there’s a certain amount of fantasy and imagination involved. You get to come up with outfits you’d a) never have the money for in real life and b) maybe don’t have any place to wear them to. So for some extra credit, I’m gonna show you what I’ll really be wearing this coming Easter. Josh has work, we don’t have any big plans, and the chances are good I’ll pack Phil up in the car to visit family in the 909. (That is, if we’re invited. They get these blog posts in their email, so we’ll see what happens when we invite ourselves out there – Donnie & Yvonne? Whatcha doing for Easter? Can Phil come and play with Thomas’ cars?) We’ll do our own Easter bunny fun when Josh gets home from work, you know, real laid back like:

My Easter Best

Clockwise from top left: Easter Bunny head mask $78.50, starcostumes.com | Black zip hoodie $46, American Apparel | Chubbie toy cars $15 for set of 10, My Little Red Wagon | Staedtler Lumocolor permanent markers $1.75 each, Blick Art Materialsย | Huggies Snug & Dry diapers $49.99, Amazonย | Fossil Keyper shopper bag $39, Select2gether | Dreamer boot cut jeans $34.50, Old Navyย | Wine Cube $10, Target | Detriot 2.0 Robocop shirt $22, United Pixelworkers | Steve Madden Fairport boots $170, Piperlime

Everything in the above montage is something I own, personally endorse, and love. Well, the diapers and cars in my purse are more for Phil. And the Wine Cube I would normally purchase in Red Sangria flavor, which I couldn’t find a good picture of on the internets. And I haven’t received my Robocop shirt in the mail just yet, but it’ll be here by Easter for sure. But I’m Steph Calvert and I still approve this message. The end!

  1. What a fun challenge!! I love that first one for spring – it’s perfect! But like Ashley said, that last one is more realistic. Love that Fossil bag!!

  2. Thanks guys! This was so fun to put together, I’m looking forward to doing more in the future! That Fossil bag is my fave; my mom in law gave it to me as an early xmas present last fall. It’s super roomy for all my crap!

  3. Steph! This turned out Ahhhhmazing! Thank you for putting so much effort in to this (it can be addicting, right?!) I really love the first look and all the accessories you added to the boards. I’ll be linking to this post on my blog next week when I re-post a few others.

    xoxo,
    A

  4. Aw thanks! In the spirit of full graphic design disclosure, I do this kind of stuff lots and lots for the CAbi Canary blog at http://www.cabicanary.com, but they give me all of the items I need to cut out and montage. This was rad because I got to pick everything out start to finish!

  5. omg love this!! you did such a great job at this! Id love to do one but I have no idea how to make it look so polished. and im really happy you posted a link to your purse! i’ve been coveting it since I saw you with it at Sharon’s!

    • Thank you!! Since my whole biz is making things look really well-designed, I figured I better not slack on my style board entries. For these, and the layouts I do for CAbi, I cut out all of the items in Photoshop, then montage em together there as well. You can create boards like these on Polyvore.com, too. I don’t think you can do the fancypants cutouts on there, but I’ve seen some really nice boards being made on there so check it out! That Fossil Keyper tote is an older model – I think they constantly update it with different fabrics so it always feels fresh and new. So you can for sure find that style of bag at department stores, but that particular combo of prints on my bag is a little harder to find since it’s older. It was tough to get a link where to get it online!
