Three Reasons Your Logo Design Isn’t Working

You’re working as hard as you can to make your small business grow, but people don’t seem to be taking notice. Have you ever wondered why? It could be something as simple as your logo design – here’s three things to consider.

1. The font’s hard to read.

I’m not naming names, but there’s a local restaurant in town that I love. They have delicious down home Southern buffet style cooking, the staff is friendly, and the prices are awesome.

The script they chose for their logo is so hard to read, that even blown up on a sign 4 feet wide by 2 feet high, you could not read the name of the restaurant.

That’s bad for name recognition, and it’s definitely bad for business. (That business has since replaced their sign with something a little more readable.)

2. It’s the same as someone else’s.

Premade design options from companies like Vistaprint sound like a good idea at the time, until you’re at an event and someone else has the same exact business cards as you, right down to the “Printed by Vistaprint” in light grey on the backside.

The problem with using a premade option isn’t just the potential for running into a duplicate design at a networking event. You’re also telling your customers that your business is so ordinary that Vistaprint could predict exactly what was right for your business without knowing anything about it.

And isn’t the whole point of starting your own business to do something so unique it stands out from your competition?

3. It’s just not that good.

I’m not here to bust your chops – there’s no shame in your Jack of All Trades game.

Almost every single person in my newsletter list is a small business owner, and every one of us started somewhere. Usually that starting point involved taking care of every aspect of your business alone, and maybe included a late night tinkering with logo ideas in Word, Paint, or even Photoshop.

But if your business is going to grow, you have to recognize there are some things you are not an expert at. Those things, in an effort to look as professional as possible to your audience, need to be handed off to professionals. Because an amateur logo makes your business look amateur, too.

If you created your own logo, it might be time to finesse that original idea into a refined design.

  1. I like your tip about the font of the logo. There have been times where I just can’t read what a logo is trying to say. Sometimes the design is just complicated. Like you say, it really is bad for business.
