Updating the Graphic Design Portfolio
I’ve been working on updating my graphic design portfolio over the past few weeks, which has been a massive undertaking. I decided I wanted something that was way more visual, quick to do a once over and see “yup, they know what they’re doing”, and most of all easier to share on social media.
All of this is great, but keep in mind I’ve got 15+ years of professional projects to sift through, and a variety of ways that I use my art and design talents. Last night, I focused on the Logo Design portfolio. Tonight it’s Print Media.
Updating the graphic design portfolio is always kind of a pain in the butt, but it gives me a good excuse for a design show and tell. Check out some projects I’ve worked on:
Business Card Design
Doctor G needed a business card and postcard design that complemented the clean design and bright, kid friendly colors in her branding. I like how the postcard has similar but different content on each side, targeting different audiences with one piece of printed collateral.
Megan Anderson from Radmegan wanted something with lots of white space that used the hand drawn elements I created for her branding in a creative way. Social media links have a way of cluttering up a business card design, but I think we found a really simple way to integrate them that doesn’t feel too crowded.
Snake Eater Tactical wanted business cards that could double as hangtags for their handmade tactical gear – we printed these on heavier paper so they could stand up to hang tag use in a retail environment.
Graphic Design for Print
We worked with 24Seven Fitness to create a promotional door hanger that encourages the local community to take advantage of a sale.
We also helped Doctor G with a single page sales sheet and bookmark to help promote her new Get the Behavior You Want System. The coolest part of this project? We worked closely with Doctor G to lay out the course materials in a fully interactive pdf workbook. The E-Book has fields that the student fills out as they go through the class, and they can save the document with their answers intact. It’s an awesome workbook; I’m really proud of it. You should take Doctor G’s class so you can see it for yourself!
CAbi (Carol Anderson by Invitation) had me lay out a poster for their Heart of CAbi Foundation that was displayed at the Oscars, and I’ve been on tap to help them lay out information for print materials at their semi-annual SCOOP conference as well.
This was a really fun project to work on for CAbi, because not only did I get to work my graphic design magic, but I also had the chance to do some cute airplane safety style illustrations for this how to tie a scarf guide.
We designed some great promotional postcards and tutorial cards for crafty outfit Make Shop Live.
We designed lots of flyers, brochures, and postcards for James Hardie Building Products.
We also laid out direct mail pieces for James Hardie Building Products like this large wrap and postcard.
Meringue Bake Shop in southern California needed help with graphic design for their one sheet, and we also designed some custom paper toys for them to print and hand out to kids they encountered at their many events.
Seven Seas Custom Canvas in Portland was looking to create a brochure that would help potential customers understand the different services they provide.
Maddie Kates Candles needed a full graphic design package including business cards, rack card, brochure, and order form design to help sell their soy candles.
Packaging and Label Design
We worked on some label designs for June Plum for a variety of bath and body products. The client was looking for a way for customers to easily differentiate between products on the shelf, so we kept similar layout on each and switched up the colors and color combinations.
Miracles for Mommy needed help creating labels for their package design that would include all of the mandatory information needed on a food label, without looking cramped. Like June Plum, Miracles for Mommy incorporated different color labels to help the consumer quickly identify their favorite flavor on the shelf.
Vehicle Wrap Design
The vehicle wrap design project I worked on for Meringue Bake Shop is one of my favorite pieces in my graphic design portfolio. I never ever saw that hot dog cart in person until after the cupcake cart had been finished for a while – it goes to show that with an insane amount of planning, really great communication with the printer, and strict adherence to print specs, you can design for absolutely everything.
Even a mobile cupcake cart.
