A Sad Farewell: Jason Sudeikis Leaves SNL

Today’s guest post comes from Jack Dawson, who’s been paying more attention to Saturday Night Live than most of us. Enjoy! (Wanna get in on the guest blogging game? Check out our guest blog posts guidelines and submit something already!)

Longtime Saturday Night Live star Jason Sudeikis finished up his career on the show recently. If you did not notice, you are not alone, since his exit was not marked with the usual fanfare. People who watched his final show will remember Sudeikis did not star in any of the skits, nor was he in the center of the crowd waving goodbye to the audience at the end of the show. Normally when actors leave Saturday Night Live there is at least some tribute to them, such as when Kristen Wiig left the show. Instead, the last time Sudeikis starred in a skit was a full two weeks before his final show, and the skit was more than forgettable.

Sudeikis worked on SNL for the past ten years. He started off as a writer, working in that post for two years before transitioning to being one of the actors. He began starring on the show with a new crop of actors like Andy Samberg, Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig back in 2005. Unfortunately his first skit on the show was also quite forgettable, which was a piece about Mother’s Day. It was not too long before Sudeikis had his breakthrough role in “The Soaking Wet Killer” which he starred in alongside Wiig. From there Sudeikis seemed to hit his stride on the show, often starring in skits with Wiig.

Later Sudeikis teamed up with Will Forte quite a bit. The duo were responsible for notorious skits such as “Jon Bovi” and “Potato Chip.” The tied relationship between Sudeikis and Wiig seemed to wane at the same time, for whatever reason. Eventually Forte left SNL and Sudeikis since has not produced any truly memorable roles on the show. He did play Mitt Romney during the election, a role he seemed to enjoy, as well as the devil during the Penn State scandal. Despite these roles, Sudeikis has been rather flat for his past two seasons on SNL, never coming off with the same biting edge of humor he had before. You can catch old reruns of classic episodes starring Sudeikis, including the old “Potato Chip” skits, by finding a quality cable provider through CableTVAdvisor.com .

Sudeikis announced he was leaving Saturday Night Live in late July on The Late Show With David Letterman. The actor seemed almost nonchalant about leaving, an idea he has kicked around openly for the past two years. When asked what he would do with his free time, Sudeikis referred to having ideas for movies based on comedy skits, hinting at his blossoming movie career. Sudeikis will be starring opposite Jennifer Anniston in the upcoming movie We’re the Millers. Given his comments, it is quite possible Sudeikis is working on developing other comedy films for the future.

Recently Sudeikis has been dating actress Olivia Wilde and the two were recently engaged to be married. The departure of Sudeikis comes at the same time as the departure of quite a few other veterans, including Andy Samberg, Seth Meyers, and Bill Hader.

    • Dude me either!! I feel like I’m totally outta touch with that show these days, and every time I hear about someone I liked on it leaving, it’s like eh…. Guess I don’t really need to get back into it, then.

    • ahahahah totally! I think that was Jack’s point, was that he seemed to just take up background space as time went on. It’s kind of a bummer when funny guys are wasted like that. On to bigger and better things!

  1. I love this man and I am so sad to see him go. The only
upside is he has taken up residency here in LA and I hope I run
    into him all the time!

  2. He’s so so funny! This is a huge loss to SNL. Not that I watch all that much, but he’s one of the cast members that I know.

  3. I was always a fan of his delivery style: a little crotchal regiony
and non-chalant all around so I was actually really sad when he
announced he’d be leaving the show. I can’t wait to see what he
does with his talent after SNL though.
